There are applications that demand high or low transmission rate, large or small coverage, or the need for little maintenance, for difficult access places, for example. There is a range of widespread technologies that can cover these demands, and this study highlighted LoRa technology in the field of telecommunications. In this way, the general objective of this monograph is: To present the performance of LoRa technology in the field of telecommunications, detailing its characteristics, benefits and innovations in the area. To this end, a clear and concise literature review on the subject was carried out, based on findings in the literature. It was possible to demonstrate that LoRa devices revolutionized the internet of things, enabling data communication over a long range, using very little energy. When connected to a non-cellular LoRaWAN network, LoRa devices accommodate a wide range of IoT applications, transmitting packets of important information. LoRaWAN networks bridge the technology gap for cellular and Wi-Fi-based networks that command high bandwidth or high power, or have limited range or inability to penetrate deep indoor environments. It was verified that the LoRa technology allows the development of several projects in the sector in which the amount of data to be transmitted by the sensors at the final edges of the structure is not very large. Thus, in episodes where videos, heavy images and other information need to be transmitted to the Application Server, perhaps LoRa is not yet a solution. However, in situations where more succinct information (texts and measurements, among other data) is sent, LoRa networks can be implemented with good performance, as highlighted in this study in the case of intelligent management of the water network, connectivity in the field, detection of natural disasters and environmental monitoring as well as location of assets.
