The research explores the main causes of failures, such as software development errors and integration issues between components, as well as analyzes their impacts on industrial processes and overall project performance. Based on a literature review and case studies, effective strategies and tools for risk mitigation were identified, such as integrated testing, technical validations, the use of specific standards (IEC 61508, IEC 61511, and ISO 31000), and engineering best practices. The study also emphasizes the importance of detailed planning and continuous monitoring throughout all stages of the systems' life cycle. The results indicate that proactive risk management significantly contributes to cost reduction, increased operational reliability, and the prevention of critical failures. As a result, many measures for separating and collecting waste are being promoted, in addition to raising awareness among the general population. The IFAM Campus Distrito Industrial also carries out this type of activity, but it is possible to note that the waste is often not placed in its correct location, making it difficult to separate and generating the adversities mentioned above. Therefore, noting that IFAM has courses focused on the automation area, this work focuses on the study and possible creation of an automation system for the selective material collection process at Campus Distrito.
