Agroecology is identified as a potential agglutinator of the principles of ecological literacy. We
characterize consumer relations with organic fairs in the city of Manaus, Brazil. We interviewed 141
people using semi-structured questionnaires. The main motivations for consumption at the fairs
were poison-free foods, valuing and strengthening family farming, resulting in a change in eating
habits. In relation to ecological literacy there was a pronounced division, expressing that there is
not necessarily a direct relationship with daily practices. The understanding of agroecology as
spheres of multiple knowledge was identified. However, it is necessary to strengthen and
disseminate scientific practices, as well as an understanding of agroecology in addition to organic
production, in order to politically strengthen peasant peoples.
