This work came initially from the need to make a study on the reliability of non destructive tests in the application of detection of welding defects. We know that inspections, in most cases, are performed manually, and the human factor, however well-trained and knowledgeable for make this activity, reduces the reliability of inspection visual results. Therefore, it is necessary to apply auxiliary statistical tools in the detection of defects, to guarantee the reliability of the inspection. First, a review of the literature on welding and applications was made. The following was a survey of the main defects inherent in fusion welding processes. The study allowed us to conclude that the use of PoD curves in the tests is a simple methodology, which provides a greater reliability to the test because it allows greater certainty that an identified defect is actually present in the inspected part, since the curve Is generated according to the dimensions of a defect.
