It is a common disease, classified into three types, or their possible causes: situational hypertension, secondary primary hypertension, the latter being the most frequent. Blood pressure (BP) measurement is the diagnostic method of hypertension. One of the technique must be performed and elaborated for better measurements. Several factors can influence your measurement such as stress, anxiety, other animals, ambient temperature, the so-called “white coat syndrome”. After establishing the diagnosis, the therapeutic approach is instituted based on antihypertensive drugs. The main agents recommended for use in are angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) such as enalapril or benazepril, and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) such as amlodipine dogs. Clinical follow-up of the patient should be done by performing returns for new measurements. This literature review aims to understand the physiological mechanisms of blood pressure (BP) and correlate with the pathophysiological mechanisms of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) in dogs and the institution of clinical management and therapeutic protocols.
